RJC Praises Senate Passage of Iran Sanctions

Washington, D.C. (January 29, 2010) -- Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) Executive Director Matt Brooks praised the United States Senate for passing the Iran Refined Petroleum Act, a bill targeting Iran's energy sector with sanctions as a response to Iranian nuclear proliferation. The Senate passed the measure on a unanimous voice vote yesterday. The Senate-passed bill must now be reconciled with the version of the legislation passed by the House of Representatives in December.
"The Senate has come through," said Brooks. "We are hopeful that the conference committee stage of the process will be as speedy as the Senate floor debate was and that a final bill can be sent to the President as soon as possible."
Brooks emphasized: "We need the strongest possible bill. The administration has only paid lip service to sanctions, repeatedly ignoring its own deadlines to sustain the fading hope for diplomatic progress. The final bill should not be weaker than what passed the House and Senate."
